BEDS – Compactable Bedding Paver Sand is a screened and sized fine particle sand that will bind and compact for a solid surface. Preparing the base below the sand is vital to ensure a finished surface that will endure the test of time. Using compaction materials and tools such as ABC and Crushed Fines and a vibrating tamper are important steps to insure a solid foundation for pavers and flagstone.
Installing Bedding Sand for a paver patio Evenly spread and dampen the Bedding sand over the compacted ABC or Crushed Fines base, creating a sand bed for the pavers to seat in. This can effectively be achieved by laying two 1″ diameter pipe up to 10′ long directly onto the compacted base as shown. We recommend using 1″ galvanized electrical conduit pipe for its inexpensive cost.
Start spreading the sand, as even as possible, (dampen if necessary) between the pipe and a couple of feet on each side. With a 2 x 4 approximately 8′ long, start screeding the sand. You may have to fill in areas and re-screed to achieve a flat, uniform layer of bedding sand. Remove and fill in the trough created from the pipe. The area can be smoothed using a trowel or bull float. Set a section of pavers. Once you complete one area, move the pipe to a new location and begin the process again.
